GAHHH. I HATE HOW GENERAL PANTS HAVE MADE MOLESKINES SO HIPSTER AND TRENDY!

I’d have to disagree. Lomo and Moleskine have been overhyped for a few years now, you really can’t blame the store for jumping on the hipster bandwagon.

Hemingway (one ‘m’), Van Gogh, Chatwin et al didn’t use Moleskines, just similar notebooks - Moleskine, as trademarked by Modo and Modo, is a brand formed in the late nineties, and conveniently used these big names in their marketing. And it was very savvy marketing too.

I find the paper in the thin paper notebooks crap to write on, because I prefer inky pens to ballpoints - they tend to catch and bleed on this stuff. Field Notes have better paper. The watercolour and sketchbooks are great though. And they’re usually pretty well made (although I have noticed that the quality of the ones I bought more recently aren’t as good as the ones I bought a few years ago).

As for Lomography… there is no expressing the amount of disdain I hold of them. They sell cameras that are literally worth $20 for ten times that, and try to make poor scenesters think that by using Lomo cameras and their film they will somehow make awesome photographs. It makes me sick. There are much cheaper ways of getting into 35mm, medium format and instant photography.

spectra:

as much as i love what they sell at General Pants and General Pants itself (but i hate people who work there because a majority of them are complete bitches..) they now sell Moleskines on their “Christmas Stocking Fillers” table.

Moleskines belong to book stores and at times, gift shops.
Not clothing stores!
Most people who walk into General Pants probably don’t even appreciate good writing paper and fantastic legendary diaries, and don’t even know who Hemmingway is!!!!
** key word: most… I go to General Pants, because I like their clothing, but then feel so extremely poor.

And they also sell Lomography: Lomolitos there.

They’ve made a trend out of Moleskines and Lomography.
AAAAHHHHHHHHHH.
